1. What is the new "at valid" UPI handle?
It is a structured and validated UPI address system mandated by SEBI for collecting funds from investors. This ensures that when you invest, your money is transferred directly to a verified bank account of a SEBI-registered intermediary, like Zerodha Fund House.
2. How can I identify a validated UPI handle?
A validated UPI handle has a standard format for easy identification. For a mutual fund, it will look like this:
intermediaryname.mf@validbankname. The two key identifiers are:
A suffix like
.mf for mutual funds.The exclusive
@valid handle, issued by NPCI.
3. What should I look for when making a payment?
When you pay using a validated UPI handle, your UPI app will display a distinct visual cue for verification: a "white thumbs-up icon inside a green triangle" icon.
The absence of this icon should serve as a caution that you may be paying an unauthorized entity. You will also see this logo inside the QR codes provided by intermediaries.
4. Why is this change important for me?
This initiative significantly boosts your security. It provides you with an easy way to verify that your payments are being made only to legitimate, SEBI-registered entities, protecting you from potential fraud and unauthorized money collection. This also encourages you to engage only with authorised entities for your investment needs.
5. Do I need to get a new UPI ID to invest?
No. As an investor, you can continue to use your existing personal UPI ID. The new "@valid" UPI IDs are only for intermediaries to obtain for collecting funds.
This new framework empowers you to transact with greater confidence, knowing your investments are being routed through a secure and verified channel.
6. Besides the new '@valid' UPI handles, how else can I confirm an intermediary's payment details are authentic before sending money?
"SEBI Check" is a tool to further empower and protect you. It allows you to verify the authenticity of an intermediary's bank account number, IFSC code, or UPI ID, regardless of your payment method (UPI, NEFT, RTGS, etc.).
You can access the tool by visiting the SEBI Check platform.
7. Whom to approach if my transaction/payment fails with the new UPI ID?
If your transaction fails, please contact your bank's customer support.
Even with the new UPI ID, the payment is processed through your bank's existing system. Your bank is the best point of contact to track the transaction and resolve any technical issues, just as you would for any other UPI payment.
8. Is it compulsory for the investors to use the new handle only?
You have the freedom to choose your preferred payment method as highlighted below:
You can still pay using other methods like NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, or Cheques.
But, if you choose to pay with UPI, you must use the new, specific UPI ID allotted to registered intermediaries for making the payment to them.
In short, using the UPI method itself is optional, but if you do use it, paying to the new UPI ID of the registered intermediary is mandatory.
