What are long-term/short-term capital gain taxes?
Listed Equity/Balanced Funds (equity-based) if held for more than one year from the date of purchase are classified as Long-term Capital Assets. If the same were disposed of within one year from the date of purchase, the same shall be classified as Short Term Capital Assets.
Similarly, unlisted Equity/Debt Funds/Balanced funds (debt-based) if held for more than 3 years from the date of purchase shall be classified as Long term capital assets. Accordingly, if such funds are disposed of within 3 years from the date of purchase shall be categorised as Short Term Capital Assets.
What is STT?
Securities Transaction Tax is applicable in respect of the sale of units of Equity-oriented Funds on a recognised stock exchange and on the repurchase (redemption) of units of Equity-oriented Funds.
STT is charged by the exchanges on the sale of units only.
